Even if they stop using the drug, teenagers who smoke cannabis weekly are more than twice as likely as non-users to develop an anxiety disorder in their late 20’s. In Australia, a 15-year study of 2,000 secondary students, conducted from 1992 to 2008, found that teens who smoked cannabis once a week or more for at least six months doubled their risk of developing an anxiety disorder for up to a decade afterwards. Researchers believe it’s possible that cannabis use causes lasting changes to the brain at a time when the parts involved in managing emotions are developing rapidly.
